ATTAINABLE HOUSING

Attainable housing is critically undersupplied

The U.S. needs to build an estimated 4.3 million multifamily units by 2035 to meet the needs of the growing population.

- Yard Matrix National Multifamily Report, July 2022

In 2023, owning a home is 62% more expensive than renting nationally, an all-time high.

- JLL Research

In 2022, 54% of multifamily renters were cost-burdened, representing an estimated 11.4 million renter households.

- American Community Survey

According to the 2024 America's Rental Housing Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University, "…rent increases are outpacing income gains. Median rents have risen nearly continuously since 2001 in inflation-adjusted terms and are 21 percent higher as of 2022. Meanwhile, renters’ incomes have risen just 2 percent during the same period.”

*Cost-burdened households spend more than 30% of income on rent and utilities.

More than a third of renters are cost burdened in every state in the country*
